MS Children's Museum's Fueled for Adventure Goes to the Classroom
Mississippi Children’s Museum’s mission is to provide a unique and exciting educational experience that ignites and inspires a thirst for discovery, knowledge and learning in all children. The goal is to empower and inspire all of our state’s children, regardless of their social, educational or economic background to discover their potential through tapping into their curiosity and creativity. This is accomplished with hands-on and engaging exhibits and programs focusing on literacy, the arts, science, health and nutrition – the keys to helping our children mature into healthy and productive adult learners.
Fueled for Adventure is a regular weekly program that teaches children and parents simple, healthy recipes that are fun to make together. Each family that attends Fueled for Adventure gets the opportunity to make the healthy snacks and gets the recipe and instructions so that can make the snack again at home. Museum’s visitors can participate in Fueled for Adventure every Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
For the month of January 2012, the students of Mrs. Knight and Ms. Washington's 1st grade class selected the letters and recipes that were featured at the museum and got the chance to make the snacks that were featured at the museum on that Thursday. In participating in the projects, the students learned about eating healthy and facts about fruits and vegetables.
Timberlawn's Counseling Program The mission of the Jackson Public Schools’ Counseling program is to provide a structured program of services to all students, parents and the school community. School counselors will assist all students in acquiring the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become effective students, responsible citizens, productive workers and lifelong learners upon graduation. We are pleased to have Mrs. Aisha Gordon as our school counselor. She is kind, caring, and enthusiastic about servicing our children. Although JPS is proud of its successful schools, the district is making a concerted effort to provide leadership and support to improve student achievement throughout the district. “We began the school year with a focus on team work and setting higher academic expectations for our children," said JPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Jayne B. Sargent. “We are emphasizing the research-based instructional practices utilized by Teach for America that focus on the role of the principal as an instructional coach in the school. I have begun meeting with principals on a regular basis to provide training regarding these practices and to ensure that we are all 'marching to the same drumbeat.'" Sargent also has said that Whitten Middle School, the district's only school with Failing rating, will receive additional support though a partnership with Jackson State University.
